Boring in Oregon, Dull in Scotland
August 1, 2013
by Larry Berteau/MT

This year’s events promise to be anything but boring and dull.
In June of 2012, the communities of Boring, Oregon, and Dull, Scotland,
became joined in their oddly shared city titles. Since that time intermittent
communications have crossed the continents between various sectors of the
two communities.
These individuals, far from their city’s namesakes, have become more than a
“wee bit” industrious.
August 9 is now a state holiday: Boring and Dull Day, of course.
The Boring Community Planning Organization will host the inaugural Boring
and Dull Day Community Social in The Park, set for 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Aug. 9,
in what promises to be a not-so-boring event.
A group of Boring residents have planned a trip to Dull, and Steve Bates, the
Chairman of the Boring Community Planning Organization, was advised that
the residents of Dull had their kilts in a kerfuffle planning festivities for the
visitors.
“We have got a few things organized for your visit,” Dull resident Thomas
Pringle communicated to Bates. “A morning safari to the top of Dull Rock,
followed by breakfast in Dull. A walking visit through the village of Dull, an
early afternoon trip to Aberfeldy to visit the Dewars Scotch whiskey distillery,
followed by a civic reception in Castle Menzies.”
Hoots mon.
The Boring-to-Dull Group Tour will depart Portland to Scotland on Oct. 6
where it will visit the Highlands before arriving in Dull Oct. 12. There are seats
available for this historic tour – doubtlessly the only one of its kind – and a
call to Lisa Foster at 503-668-7019 will provide more details.
The Boring Oregon Foundation is selling $20 raffle tickets, with only 500 being
made available. The winner will have a choice of joining the revelry of the tour
group, or accepting the decidedly more boring version of receiving $1,500 in
cash.
Tickets for the raffle can be purchased at the Boring and Sandy branches of
Clackamas County Bank, Taza Coffee House and Burns Feed Store in Orient,
Boring Bark, Not So Boring Bar & Grill, Overall Outlook, Red Apple Restaurant,
Parkside Salon, Linal Art Studios and Gerens Farm Supply.
The raffle drawing will be held at the community social, Aug. 9 with former
County Commissioner Jamie Damon doing the honors. Damon was
instrumental in starting the Boring and Dull Day movement while serving on
the commission.
The social festivities will include free ice cream for all, plus to honor Scotland
a piper and drummer from the Sir James McDonald Pipe Band will play; to
honor America the Tonesetters Barbershop Quartet will perform; to honor our
military the Oregon National Guard will present colors.
Parking space will be available in the Boring-Damascus Grange lot on Grange
Street. Overflow parking will be on School Avenue and the school parking lots.
The Dee Street parking lot will be reserved for dignitaries, seniors and
handicapped.
