GOVERNMENT CAMP – As snow continues to fall, Skibowl has released another
full slate of great family friendly special events for the upcoming holidays.
“There’s a special atmosphere here at Skibowl that is both unique and
intimate,” said Kirk Hanna, owner and operator of Mt. Hood Skibowl. “While
we are America’s Largest Night Ski Area, the attitude of our employees and
our exceptional terrain create a great shared spirit among our guests.”
Distinctive for many reasons, Skibowl has the most lit Black Diamond (expert)
runs of any resort in the state and is America’s Largest Night Ski Area. It
features 65 runs, 34 night runs and two fully lit terrain parks, plus two day
lodges and the mid-mountain Historic Warming Hut serving hot goulash and
good beer.
Skibowl draws both accomplished riders and beginners to its nearly 1,000
skiable acres. Experienced snow riders are especially enticed by Skibowl’s
300-acre Outback, a gladed area renown for hidden powder stashes days after
storms.
On the east side, a new conveyor lift will effortlessly carry guests from the
parking lot up to the Multorpor Lodge. Six new snowmaking fan guns will help
the mountain build an early snow base for the Tube Hill and the base of Lower
Bowl, allowing for opening with even less snow from Mother Nature.
Highlights from the Skibowl calendar featuring unique, fun and charitable
events include:
December Holiday Fun December 17, a visit from Santa Claus and Frosty
the Snowman and Saturday Night Fireworks. Santa Claus, the big elf himself,
and Frosty the Snowman will be skiing around Skibowl all day and into the
evening handing out candy canes to good snow riders and to families enjoying
the Skibowl Tube Hill and Winter Snowplay Land adjacent to the Multorpor
Lodge. They’ll be posing for pictures and hearing wishes from noon to 4 p.m.
and joining in the fun of the 8 p.m. fireworks display at Skibowl West that will
launch the start off the holiday season at Skibowl.
December 31, 24th Annual New Year’s Eve Fireworks Extravaganza
and Torchlight Parade For 24 years, Skibowl has been the place to ring in
the New Year and this year will be even bigger. In addition to live music, the
slope-side Beer Garden, and legendary fireworks display at midnight and
riding until 2 a.m., Skibowl will be staging a dramatic pre-fireworks Torchlight
Parade down the Lower Bowl run. The illuminating event will feature members
of the Mt. Hood Race Team and their families along with community leaders
from Government Camp who, together in formation, will blaze a trail down the
darkened Lower Bowl.
Winter Rail Jams and Ski Jumping Rail jams are friendly competitions
where boarders and skiers throw down their best tricks as they ride rails,
boxes, and special features designed by Skibowl’s well-regarded terrain park
crew headed by Jesse McDonald. After warming up, the competition begins
and the pressure to perform increases with notable prizes up for grabs,
including gear and clothing. On Dec. 3, it’s the Premature Jibulation Rail Jam
sponsored by Rome Snowboards, marking the opening of the winter season.
On New Year’s Eve afternoon, boarders and skiers can compete in the
Pyramids and Prophecy Rail Jam, sponsored by Atmosphere Clothing, set from
1-3 p.m. with awards from 4-5 p.m. in the Beer Stube.
