The “Mother of all Relays” raced through the Mountain community in August – the largest relay in the world.

The Hood to Coast Relay, spanning 199 grueling miles from Timberline Lodge to Seaside, celebrated its 31st event, attracting 1,050 teams of 8-12 runners. John Munro (pictured,

dubbed “The Crazies Gone Coastal,” – a mixed masters team of 40-year-olds
and older, and an equal number of men and women.

“I lived in Portland from 1994 to 2008 and competed in the relay then,” Munro
said. “I’ve been on three different teams over the years. This is my 15th time
doing the Hood to Coast.”

The race has 36 legs that range from 3 1/2 miles to just over 8 miles with
varying degrees of difficulty, and each team runner is required to complete
three of the legs.

“There’s a wonderful camaraderie to it, and it’s fun to share the experience of
the relay with the team,” Munro said. “And there’s the running challenge.”

And he hasn’t had enough. “I’ll do it again next year,” he said.

Sponsors helped to raise $615,000 for the Hood to Coast’s official charity, The
American Cancer Society. The haul set a record for the event.
