Malibu Raceway Roars Into Action

July 1, 2013

by Hans Wipper/for the MT

Gentlemen and ladies, children of all ages, start your engines.

The new Malibu Raceway is on track, up and running, and providing a
challenge for all racing enthusiasts.

Mt. Hood Skibowl is celebrating 25 years of summer fun with the addition of
the historic raceway – plus other improvements to the Mt. Hood Adventure
Park.

The old kart track is gone and in its place are two larger tracks designed by
Kevin O’Connell, the previous owner of Malibu.

The Sprint car track features 700 linear feet of tight turns which allows
multiple racers to compete against each other in wheel-to-wheel racing during
a timed race.

There are single and double seat Sprint cars, allowing those not quite old
enough to drive their own to experience the thrill of racing.

The second track – 1,300 linear feet long – is for Virage and Grand Virage
Indy cars, which are seven-tenths scale replicas of actual Indy cars. There are
two double Grand Virage racers for young passengers as well.

In the evening the two tracks can be combined to make one large super track
for the Virage cars.

Times have been averaging in the 40 seconds-a-lap range on the Virage Indy
car track, but times keep coming down as drivers get their laps in. The cars
reach speeds up to 50 mph on the back straight.

Anyone with a current driver’s license qualifies for a Malibu license – required
to be at the controls of a Virage. For those at least 14 years old, a time can be
set up to complete the car control clinic and earn a Malibu license.

The Sprint track is a 5-minute timed race, allowing plenty of time to put the
pedal to the metal and execute that perfect pass. Sprint cars hit top speeds of
30 mph. The new cars all have four stroke engines that provide for a cleaner
and quieter racing experience and are more environmentally friendly.

Other summer Skibowl activities
The Alpine Slide has upgraded all the sleds to a more advanced style to
improve the ride for everyone. Quicker acceleration and more control in the
turns are the main features of the new sleds, with the brakes still at your
finger tips.

At Skibowl East the Zip Line has expanded to three towers, two zips and more
than 800 feet of soaring action. Participants can try their balance on the two
new tight wires – stretched tight just off the ground between trees.

With the purchase of an Adventure Pass, new this year are unlimited batting
cages, pony rides and two free tokens to the Ratskeller Arcade located on the
second floor of the Ratskeller building in the heart of Government Camp.

The Multorpor Lodge received a complete makeover and now hosts the 70-
meter Bar and Grill and the all-new food court located outside the lodge.

The Adventure Park is open seven days a week through Labor Day, followed
by weekends in September. For up-to-date information go to
www.skibowl.com or call 503-222-2695.
