Mountain Shutterbug Embraces His Two Faces: Bohemian, Tech Geek
January 2, 2012
by Larry Berteau/MT

Gary Randall has lived on all sides of Mount Hood and in the Columbia River Gorge – but has spent the last 23 years on the south side of the Mountain.
His earliest memories are of Mount Hood and Mount Adams from Hood River and the waterfalls and
vistas from Crown Point and Vista House.
Photography is a renewed passion, as much has changed in his life in the last
10 years.
“Not many of the changes were those that I would have chosen to make,”
Randall said. “But they all were ultimately necessary for me to do what I now
feel that I was meant to do. It’s kind of funny how that works.”
Years ago he was the “resident computer guy” in an industrial machine shop.
When his boss got a digital camera and couldn’t figure it out, it ended on
Randall’s desk. Since that time, he was hooked.
“The old boss is gone now, and I’m not sure I’m all that thrilled with the new
boss,” he said. “But I only have to look at him when I look in the mirror.”
His work depends on artistic ability which is motivated by his passion and
need to express it in a gratifying way. He has sketched, drawn, painted and
sculpted in attempts to find an outlet for expression.
“A collision of circumstances at the right time drew my inner Bohemian into
collaboration with my inner tech geek,” he said. “ Digital photography came
along at a time when I was receptive to the technology and how I could use it
as an art form.”
Randall’s work is on display in his book “A Perfect Passion – The Perfect
Place.”
