Rail Jam Swoops in at Skibowl

January 2, 2011

by Monica Cory/for the MT

Four big nights are on the horizon at Skibowl for skiers and boarders.

The 4-F Rail Jam Series — the four Fs stand for Fan Favorite Feature Friday —
kicks off Jan. 7, with Jan. 21, Feb. 4 and Feb. 18 rounding out the series.

Riders will not only be able to show off their skills on various rails and jump
features for fun and prizes, but will also have the opportunity to make
recommendations on the terrain park.

“We’ll take that input and incorporate it into the park layout each night of the
4-F series,” said Kirk Hanna, owner-operator of Skibowl. “Riders know what
they like and we want to let them help design the course.”

DaKine is the presenting sponsor of the series, with other support provided by
Betty Rides, Burton and Next Adventure.

Portland radio stations will play party music during the jams. Wild 107.5 will
be on site Jan. 21, followed by Z100, and 105.9 The Brew on the final night,
Feb. 18, which also coincides with 80s Night at Skibowl.

On 80s Night, all riders are encouraged to sport the 80s look: headbands,
shoulder pads, leg warmers, neon, mullets and spiky do’s. Anyone clad in 80s
garb will qualify for a discounted night lift ticket. There will be prizes and food
and drink specials in the bar.

The jams will take place on the Jesse’s Flight Terrain Park in the lower bowl
area where fans can watch fellow snow riders battle it out or participate in the
event. The competition is free but all competitors must sign in at registration
and a lift ticket is required. Helmets are strongly encouraged. Riders under 18
must have a parent on site to sign a waiver.

“We are excited to host these events and are looking forward to seeing some
creative and fun feature ideas and combos from all the people that spend time
in our terrain parks,” said Troy Fischer, night operations manager and avid
snowboarder. “Skibowl has an abundance of natural terrain and we are
focusing on complimenting that with some fun, man-made and manicured
features.”

Registration will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 7 in the Outback Lodge.
Riders will show their stuff and impress their friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
After the action the fun will continue in the Beer Stube where riders who
brought their A game will pick up their awards.
