Sandy High Gets Dramatic in New Theater

The Sandy High School Drama program launched their new large theater last
fall with a musical comedy.
While Sandy’s thespians will get to reveal another new space this month, a
black box theater, the spring production will swing to the other end of the
spectrum.
“Irena’s Vow,” by Dan Gordon, is based on the true story of Irena Gut, a 19-
year-old housekeeper in the home of a Nazi, Major Rugemer, as she tries to
hide a dozen Jews in Rugemer’s basement.
Cassidy Williams plays the lead of Irena. Senior Drew McLaughlin plays Irena
as an older woman, and acts as the narrator.
McLaughlin has relished the challenge of taking on a more serious play.
“It’s really refreshing to have something so dramatic,” said McLaughlin, 18,
noting themes in the show include abortion, enslavement and religion.
“There’s still humor in everything, but it’s nice to take a break from comedy.
You have to tap into your own emotions ... and use that to connect with your
characters.”
The black box theater offers a much more intimate space, but will also mean
fewer seats for theatergoers. The production will be in three-quarters, with
the audience on three sides of the playing area and much closer to the actors.
“Now that you’re in the black box it’s about achieving the intimacy, taking it
back a notch,” said Peter Woodford, an 18-year-old senior who plays Major
Rugemer.
Sandy High School Drama presents “Irena’s Vow,” by Dan Gordon, at 7:30
p.m. March 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16, at 37400 SE Bell Street in Sandy.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.
