Thompson Returns as Mountain Representative on School Board

June 1, 2013

Dan Thompson defeated incumbent Kurt McKnight to represent the Mountain
community on the Oregon Trail School board for the Zone 3 (Welches)
director in the May 21 election. Thompson, who previously served on the
board before serving as the school district’s safety officer, received 1,681
votes (53.4 percent), while McKnight received 1,436 votes (45.6 percent).

“I’m really excited to get the position back,” Thompson said. “I’ve been
wanting to do this for a couple years now.”

Thompson also expressed his gratitude toward the Mountain community for
electing him, while noting he feels a sense of great responsibility to represent
them in the school district. He hopes to address the future of the district’s
swimming pool, the Olin Y. Bignall Aquatic Center, noting that a possible
closure would impact many people, including the Sandy High School water
polo and swim teams.

“We just can’t close that,” said Thompson. “That wouldn’t be fair to Friends of
the Pool, it wouldn’t be fair to the kids in high school.”

McKnight, who previously served on the district’s budget committee, facilities
task force and bond oversight committee, plans on staying active in the
district, particularly since his son is a freshman at Sandy High School.

McKnight noted he called district superintendent Aaron Bayer to express his
continued support.

“I learned a lot under Aaron’s leadership,” he said. “It’s been very pleasing to
see the results of that work that we put out. Our kids are improving in many
areas.

“I really wish I could have served another term to be able to continue to
support that positive growth and change,” McKnight added.

Randy Carmony (Zone 7, At Large), Marjan Salveter (Zone 1, North Sandy)
and Terry Lenchitsky (Zone 5, Cottrell/Bull Run) all earned reelection on the
school board.

Other election winners include Roger Edwards, Bob Reeves and Cliff Fortune
as directors 3, 4 and 5, respectively, on the Hoodland Fire District Board; John
Bay and Cornelia “Lia” Gunderson for positions 2 and 4, respectively, on the
Government Camp Sanitary District board of directors; Charisse O’Neall, Dick
Stone and Terry L. Hescock for positions 2, 3 and 5, respectively, on the
Aldercreek-Barlow Water board; Peter C. Henniger, Randy Hiatt and Molly G.
Smith for positions 1, 3 and 5 on the Sleepy Hollow Water board.

All noted positions above are 4-year terms.

No candidate filed for position 2 on the Sleepy Hollow Water board or for
positions 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 on the Wildwood Annex Water board.
